An in-depth Interview w/ DAN MEDEIROS
Q: Can you tell us about your musical journey and what led you to pursue a career in music?
Of course! My musical journey has been a mix of passion, discovery, and personal growth. Growing up, music was always a huge part of my life—it was my escape, my way of expressing emotions I couldn’t put into words. I remember being inspired by artists who could tell powerful stories through their lyrics and melodies, and I always dreamed of doing the same. Over time, I started experimenting with songwriting and performing, and I realized how much joy it brought not just to me, but to others who connected with my music. Releasing my debut single, *DREAMS*, was a huge milestone for me, and having it recognized with two Iowa Music Award nominations has been such an incredible affirmation of this path. Pursuing music felt like a natural step for me—it's where my heart is, and I love the way it allows me to connect with people on such a deep level. It’s been a challenging yet rewarding journey, and I’m excited for what’s to come.
Q: How does your creative process typically unfold when writing new music?
My creative process usually starts with a feeling or an idea that I can’t shake—something that’s been on my mind or weighing on my heart. Sometimes it begins with a melody that pops into my head, or I might sit down with my guitar or at the piano and let the music guide me. Lyrics often come from personal experiences or stories I feel inspired to tell. I like to jot down phrases or words that resonate with me, and from there, I start piecing together the bigger picture. It’s a bit like solving a puzzle—finding the right words and melodies to capture what I’m trying to say. Collaboration is another part I enjoy. Working with other musicians or producers can bring fresh perspectives that help elevate the song. At the core of it all, I try to stay authentic to my emotions and experiences, because I believe the most powerful music comes from a genuine place. It’s a mix of intuition, experimentation, and trusting the process.
Q: What themes or messages do you hope to convey through your music?
Through my music, I hope to convey themes of hope, self-discovery, and resilience. Life is such a mix of highs and lows, and I want my songs to reflect that—to remind people that even in the darkest moments, there’s always a light waiting to shine through. I love exploring emotions we all experience—love, loss, dreams, and struggles—and turning them into something people can connect with on a personal level. I also aim to inspire listeners to embrace their true selves and keep chasing their dreams, no matter the obstacles. Ultimately, my goal is for my music to be a source of comfort and empowerment. If someone listens to my songs and feels understood or uplifted, then I feel like I’ve done my job as an artist.
Q: Who are some of your biggest musical influences, and how have they shaped your sound?
Some of my biggest musical influences are artists who tell stories with their music and evoke deep emotions. Growing up in the 80's & 90's heavily influenced my sound, from bands like: Tears For Fears, Crowded House, Nirvana & Deftones. These influences have taught me the importance of staying true to my voice while experimenting with different styles. They’ve shown me that music isn’t just about sound—it’s about storytelling and making people feel something real.
Q: How has your music evolved through the years?
My music has evolved significantly over the years, and it’s been an incredible journey of growth and self-discovery. When I first started, my focus was more on experimenting—figuring out my sound and exploring different genres to see what resonated with me. Back then, my songwriting was a bit simpler, more about expressing raw emotions without overthinking the structure or production. Over time, I’ve gained a deeper understanding of how to translate my emotions and experiences into music that connects with others. My lyrics have become more introspective and intentional, and I’ve developed a clearer vision of the sound I want to create. Releasing *DREAMS* was a turning point for me—it represents the culmination of everything I’ve learned so far and the direction I want to take moving forward. I’m still growing, but I feel more confident in my voice as an artist and more focused on creating music that’s authentic and meaningful.
Q: Can you share a memorable experience from touring or performing live that has impacted you as an artist?
One of the most memorable experiences I’ve had performing live was the first time the audience sang my lyrics back to me. It was during a show where I performed my debut single, *DREAMS*, and hearing people connect with something I had poured my heart into was overwhelming in the best way. That moment solidified why I do what I do. Music has this incredible power to bring people together, and experiencing that connection firsthand reminded me how meaningful it is to share my stories. Another unforgettable moment was when someone approached me after a show to say my music helped them through a tough time. It was humbling and inspiring to realize the impact my songs can have on someone’s life. Those moments fuel my passion and push me to keep growing as an artist.
Q: How has the rise of digital media and social platforms affected your music career?
The rise of digital media and social platforms has been a game-changer for my music career. It’s given me the opportunity to share my music with a global audience in a way that wouldn’t have been possible before. Platforms like Spotify, Instagram, and TikTok allow me to connect with listeners directly and showcase my personality and process alongside my songs. Social media has also made it easier to build a community of supporters who truly resonate with my music. I love engaging with fans, hearing their stories, and seeing how my songs have touched their lives. On the creative side, these platforms inspire me to think outside the box—not just about music but also about how I share my journey as an artist. It’s definitely challenging to stand out in such a crowded space, but I see it as an opportunity to be authentic and consistent in connecting with people who believe in what I do. Overall, digital media has opened so many doors for me as an independent artist, and I’m excited to keep exploring new ways to grow and evolve with it.
Q: What do you think the future holds for alternative music, and where do you see yourself fitting into that landscape?
I think the future of alternative music is incredibly exciting. It’s such a dynamic genre that constantly evolves by blending influences from different styles and breaking traditional boundaries. With the rise of streaming platforms and digital media, artists have more freedom than ever to experiment and connect with niche audiences, which I believe will lead to even more diversity and innovation in the genre. For me, alternative music is about authenticity and storytelling, and that’s where I see myself fitting into the landscape. I want to continue creating songs that resonate emotionally and offer something fresh while staying true to who I am as an artist. As alternative music grows, I hope to be part of a new wave of artists who push boundaries and bring people together through honest and meaningful music. I’m excited to contribute my voice to a genre that thrives on individuality and connection.
Q: What advice would you give to aspiring alternative musicians trying to find their voice?
My advice to aspiring alternative musicians is to embrace your individuality and stay true to yourself. Alternative music thrives on authenticity, so don’t be afraid to explore your unique sound and perspective—it’s what will make you stand out.Take the time to experiment with different styles, influences, and writing techniques. Finding your voice is a process, and it’s okay if it doesn’t happen overnight. Trust your instincts, and let your experiences, emotions, and passions guide your creativity. Surround yourself with people who inspire and challenge you. Collaborating with other musicians or even just sharing ideas can help you grow and see things from new perspectives. Most importantly, don’t be discouraged by setbacks. The music industry can be tough, but perseverance and staying connected to why you create music in the first place will carry you through. Your authenticity is your greatest strength, so let it shine.
Q: Finally, what's next for you? Can you hint at any upcoming projects or collaborations?
Absolutely! I’m so excited for what’s ahead. Right now, I’m working on some new music that dives even deeper into my sound and storytelling. I can’t reveal too much yet, but there’s definitely an upcoming project in the works that I think my listeners will really connect with. I’m also exploring some exciting collaborations with other artists and producers who inspire me, which has been an amazing way to push my creativity and try new things. Beyond music, I’m planning more live performances and looking forward to connecting with fans in person—it’s one of my favorite parts of being an artist. Stay tuned because there’s a lot coming, and I can’t wait to share this next chapter with everyone!
